Inside DueDil. Meet Elia, Product Designer

Joining a new company can often be seen as quite daunting. When you join a new team, you become part of a whole new unfamiliar universe. You meet new people, learn new skills, explore a new working culture and might even acquire a new lifestyle.

To provide you with some insight into what it means to be the latest addition to the DueDil family, I would like to introduce you to Elia Kim. Elia joined DueDil as a Product Designer just over a month ago. I sat down with her to understand her candidate journey of joining DueDil and gather some thoughts on her experience at DueDil so far.

How did you discover DueDil?

I heard about DueDil while helping out a former colleague who was using the DueDil Free Account. Tess, DueDil’s HR Coordinator, then found me on a job search marketplace. I was looking for the next challenge in my career and wanted to find a company that had three things - a new and interesting industry, a good vibe, and a great team culture. When I did some research on DueDil, I found it was a part of a fascinating industry with a great company vibe so I was inclined to find out more.

What were the steps after that?

I had an initial phone interview with the Senior Product Designer, Katerina. Then I was given two design tasks, one to complete and present to the design team, and one to collaborate with the team at the next interview. I really enjoyed doing these tasks as it was a great way to communicate my working process and also to learn about the workflows at DueDil.

We discussed the design tasks and other topics, some design related, and some not. I found myself really engaged in the conversations that were being brought to the table and was able to see myself really enjoying working at DueDil.

Another thing I really liked about the interview process was that it was very clear. Tess, the HR Coordinator, gave me updates on what was happening, which was very informative. The hiring manager gave me a call to check in during the process, and I was invited to come in to the office to meet the rest of the team more informally, prior to joining the company.

Where did you work before?

I previously worked as a Lead UI/UX Designer at a digital agency predominantly working in the e-commerce space. Prior to that, I worked at marketing agencies that delivered various digital solutions from websites to apps. The biggest difference about working at an agency compared to working on one brand, is that you get exposure to a variety of industries. You learn to adapt quickly and design for a variety of different business goals, which I have certainly strengthened over time. This is great when you enjoy churning out project after project, but I found myself craving for something different. I wanted to really dig deep into a project and evolve it. I went looking for an in-house Product Designer role.

Could you tell me about your current role and the team?

I am a Product Designer which means I’m part of the Product team. Together, we work on constantly improving and building new features to improve our user experience.

The vision that Katerina and I share is to continuously test and shape our product to exceed our customer’s needs. We want to invest more time into research and talk to our customers more frequently to produce a more user centric product. We are looking forward to working on many projects including the improvements of onboarding, information graphs, and notifications.

What projects are you currently working on?

I am working on a few different streams at the moment. As a newbie to the team, I think this is a great way for me to learn about the Product. It helps me to understand the broader picture. Firstly, I am working on creating a Help & Feedback section, where users can get quick help and give us feedback. The second stream is about connectivity between people and companies with the challenge to improve its visibility and value. The third stream is to redesign the account page to be clear and useful.

What is the work environment like at DueDil?

DueDil has a ‘start-up vibe’ to it - less hierarchical, an open atmosphere and freedom of thoughts. People enjoy working with each other and everyone is approachable. There’s a strong sense of transparency across the company, all the way down from senior level. We have fortnightly All Hands meetings where the entire company discusses the latest news to bring alignment to the team. I also enjoy Tech Fridays where everyone is invited to learn about the latest cool thing that the Engineering team have been working on.

If you were not at DueDil where would you be?

On the beach!  

What do you do when you are not creating great designs for DueDil?

Working as a Digital Designer, I always find the need to step away from the screen and do something physical. It not only helps me with my work-life balance, but actually helps with solving complicated problems for work. Those random moments when I get an awesome idea for a project, while doing yoga, are so satisfying.

Tell us something that’s not on your LinkedIn Profile?

I’d love to have a cottage up in the mountains, with my own little farm and animals and be off the grid for a couple of years, with no internet! We don’t really think about stopping and taking a break from our busy lives and that’s something I’d love to do in the future.
